IB ESS SL and HL Tutoring

The current ESS course is available at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

Students at both levels study the core ESS syllabus and work with the three unifying concepts of perspectives, systems and sustainability. HL students study additional content in greater depth and also apply three specific lenses: environmental law, environmental and ecological economics, and environmental ethics. The IB recommends 150 teaching hours for SL and 240 for HL.

The ESS Internal Assessment is based on an individual investigation developed by the student.

Under the current course, students submit an individual report of up to 3,000 words. The investigation also asks students to consider tensions between different perspectives associated with an environmental issue or strategy.

Perspectives

Students need to identify and evaluate these different perspectives rather than assume that every environmental problem has one universally accepted solution.

Systems

Systems thinking helps students understand relationships, interactions, inputs, outputs, feedback and change within natural and human systems.

Sustainability

Students examine how environmental, social and economic needs interact and evaluate different approaches to managing resources and environmental challenges.

The IB identifies these three concepts as central to the ESS framework.

Higher Level ESS Support

ESS HL requires additional depth and greater synthesis across the course.
